Do I pay less for my home insurance when having an alarm?
When taking out a home insurance it is important to be aware of the value of the reconstruction costs of the house (building) and the value of the objects we have in it (contents), you can use our content calculator. For a better protection some people decide to equip their house with armoured doors, cameras or installing an alarm to increase security against possible theft or occupation.
When requesting a quote for your home insurance, one of the questions is the protection of the home and if it has an alarm. In most cases it’s not obligated to have an alarm, but this depends on the amount that needs to be insured.
If because of the insured amounts it’s obligated to have an alarm, it’s important that the alarm is always connected when you’re not inside the house or asleep.
In the case it’s not obligated to have an alarm we normally advise not to mention in the policy that there is an alarm connected to the central. This because of two reasons:
- It hardly has any effect on the premium
- In the case of a robbery and it would show, by the report from the alarm central, that the alarm was not connected at the time it happened, the insurer could deny the claim.
In any case it’s always good to have an alarm installed to make sure you, your family and your belongings are safe, but also it gives protection against squatters entering your home while away.
We recommend that you carefully read the conditions of your home policy and if you have any questions, contact us.
