A Guide to Understanding Insurance Coverage and the Role of the Consorcio de Seguros
The cold drop (DANA) is causing significant damage in various parts of Spain, with heavy rainfall, flooding, and strong winds leading to considerable material damage. We sympathise with those affected and extend our full support during these challenging times. Under these circumstances, it is essential that our clients understand which damages are covered by their home, car, and business insurance policies, and which are not.
Covered and Non-Covered Damages
Home Insurance
Home insurance generally covers damage caused by rain and strong winds, including damage to the home itself and loss of personal belongings. However, damage due to poor maintenance, rising groundwater levels, and water seepage through doors is usually not covered.
Car Insurance
In the case of car insurance, water damage is often covered if the policy includes damage coverage for the vehicle. Damage to vehicles parked on the street and swept away by water is typically also covered. However, cars with basic third-party liability insurance that lacks weather-related coverage are not covered.
Business Insurance
Business insurance usually covers damage from floods and strong winds, including structural damage and loss of inventory. As with home insurance, damage due to poor maintenance is not covered.
Role of the Consorcio de Seguros
In cases where damage is not covered by the policy, the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros can take on extraordinary damages, such as those caused by certain natural disasters. In these cases, policyholders must file a claim directly with the Consorcio, which will assess and manage compensation.
Recommendations and Patience
Given the extent of the damage caused by DANA, we kindly ask our clients to be patient. Insurance companies and the Consorcio are working as quickly as possible, but priority is given to the most urgent cases. We recommend documenting all damages with photos and keeping all repair invoices readily available.
In these difficult times, we are here to support you and guide you through every step of the process.
